Are you looking to be more environmentally conscious but are unsure of how that will impact your wallet? Here are a few ways to better the earth and your bank account.
RECYCLING AND RETURNABLES
One of the easiest ways to stay green on a budget is to recycle. While it might seem convenient to toss everything in the trash, having a separate recycling bin will go a long way in reducing your impact on the local landfill. When recycling, make sure to check state law to see if you can return bottles and cans. In some states, stores will return up to 10 cents for used cans.
WEAR LAYERS IN WINTER
With summer coming to a close and winter right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about heating your home. Most people will crank up the thermostat, but that will burn a hole in your pocket and leave a giant carbon footprint. Instead, you can leave your thermostat 3 degrees colder than you would normally have it, and just wear a sweater when at home. This will save your money and the environment.
BUY FRESH AND LOCAL PRODUCE
This is something that we all can do. Find a local farmers market, and buy some of your produce there instead of at the supermarket. This lowers your carbon footprint because the produce at the local market has not traveled as far as the produce in the supermarket. When you invest in local farmers, you are investing in your health, the environment, and your community. Just make sure to mask up to protect you and those around you!
Regardless of where you live, there are things you can do to make sustainable living choices. If we all followed just a few of these suggestions the effects would be beneficial to our lifestyles.
